Why Celebrities Smoke Cigarettes?

0

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (No Ratings Yet)
Loading ... Loading ...

Is it true that celebrities really desist from endorsing cigarettes of all hues? Is it because they are conscious of their social responsibilities? Pictures of celebrities smoking appear glamorous and civilized, regardless of the context of the scene in a movie and thus it strikes a cord with teens. They are shown at parties with a cigarette which pushes young people to emulate them. The brands they smoke, Marlboro cigarettes, Camel, Winston, Virginia Slims, Salem etc, become a point of campus discussion.

Could it be that the stars themselves have been influenced by the glamour that was once associated with cigarettes? Perhaps if you spend long enough in the fantasy world of film you start to believe in the celluloid image. Just like Gloria Swanson in ‘Sunset Boulevard’ you lose touch with reality.

After all, it’s not so long ago that everybody who was somebody in Hollywood smoked and was proud of it. Cigarettes smoking was glamorous and sophisticated. Just think of the iconic image of Audrey Hepburn in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ as Holly Golightly posing elegantly with her long cigarette holder, upswept chignon and little black dress.

What’s not so elegant of course is the way Audrey Hepburn succumbed to the smoking habit herself. Ignoring her mother’s ‘beauty tip’ to: “keep to six cigarettes a day only”, Hepburn managed two or three packs at her worst times – even smoking in her nun’s habit on the set of ‘The Nun’s Story’ and chain smoking her way through ‘My Fair Lady’. Unsurprisingly, she suffered from asthma for most of her life and died of cancer at only 63 – looking frail and old for her years. Not the kind of ending we like to imagine for the sublime Holly Golightly.

There’s no doubt that the very nature of the movie business has caused many a celebrity to start treading the nicotine path. Smoking is as common in movies today as it was back in the 1950′s although overall smoking in the population at large has reduced. Could it be that a cigarette has become the film prop of choice for actors looking for an easy way to inhabit another skin?

For some celebrities – tired of the constant criticism and the ciggy shots splashed across the tabloids – a kind of smoking defiance has crept in. As Gwyneth Paltrow once said, “I smoke and I’m not going to stop!” Paltrow – famous for getting through a pack of Camel Lights a day in her teens and twenties – has only very recently quit smoking. Perhaps she started to wonder how her fine, fair skin and ethereal beauty would cope with the collagen depletion in her fourties and fifties.

Some celebrities keep going with the smoking habit whatever the consequences and even if it impacts on their relationships. It’s well known that smoking was a bone of contention between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston during their marriage. Brad Pitt is on record as saying how much he hated his ex-wife’s chain smoking. His disapproval didn’t cut much ice with Jennifer though – as recent paparazzi photos show. You have to ask why one of the worlds most loved and naturally attractive women would do this to themselves?

Similarly, iconic top model Kate Moss is regularly photographed with her cigarettes, a lighter and a mobile phone as her only fashion accessory. As a supreme super model its probably not surprising that Moss still manages to appear effortlessly elegant and beautiful however she’s photographed – at least for now. She certainly shows no signs of wanting to quit smoking any time soon. Perhaps like so many in her world – she associates smoking with thinness. Or perhaps, for her, it’s the least troubling of her addictions.

When celebrities do chose to quit its fascinating that the reasons given are so often not about looks. Catherine Zeta-Jones for instance, quit smoking – so she said – because she didn’t want her children to start asking questions. Not as you might have thought – because beauty is her personal trademark and smoking would kick-start skin aging and undermine her potential to earn huge sums of money.

Whatever the reasons celebrities have for smoking or for deciding to quit – the truth about skin damage and smoking very rarely features as a major factor in the debate. Well – we think it should. So our advice to all you celebrity smokers out there – carry on smoking if you want but don’t expect your fickle public not to notice the effect on your looks. And when you hit a deluded middle age you may still be able to say, like Gloria Swanson in ‘Sunset Boulevard’: “I’m ready for my close-up now Mr de Mille” – but only if it’s filmed in heavy soft-focus, expertly back-lit and then extensively re-touched afterwards.

Great Tips For Celebrities to Follow

0

Posted on : 03-08-2010 | By : admin | In : Celebrity
1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (No Ratings Yet)
Loading ... Loading ...

We live in a celebrity obsessed culture. There are news programs devoted exclusively to the lives of stars, and weekly publications that report every facet of their lives both professional and personal. They are not allowed any measure of privacy. Camera people follow them on the most mundane of tasks, await them outside their homes to take photos that can be worth thousands of dollars and even rifle through their trash to find any snippet of information.

Common sense would tell someone in this situation that they must behave in a very respectable manner at all times living in the proverbial fish bowl. Yet, most celebrities do not seem to learn. Therefore I have compiled a list of tips that celebrities on the A, B, or even D list may want to follow.

Do Not Cheat On Your Spouse

This is not to say that they are supposed to be morally superior, or that they need to set an example. The simple truth is that with the increased level of scrutiny it is likely that they will get caught. Celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, and Ryan Phillippe to name a few can attest to this. It is not a good idea of your spouse to learn of your wandering eye through the pages of Star Magazine.

Do Not Commit Any Crimes

Celebrity mug shots are the dreams of publishers of celebrity weeklies such as Star Magazine and The National Enquirer. There are websites devoted exclusively to embarrassing pictures of entertainers. Some favorites are those of Nick Nolte, Robert Downey Jr., Hugh Grant to name a few. Before the desire to pick up a prostitute, buy illegal drugs, or drive under the influence takes hold, remember every interview going forward will discuss the lapse in judgment and show the less than flattering photo provided in public records.

Do Not Lose or Gain Drastic Amounts of Weight

Most of us know that it is incredibly easy to gain weight as we age. Celebrities have no such luck. Every morsel that they consume must be monitored. A mere five pounds of extra weight gain can easily lead to false pregnancy or depression rumors. On the opposite end of the spectrum it is not unheard of for celebrities to be shamed into shedding pounds only to be questioned about their weight loss methods or about having an eating disorder once the weight loss becomes too drastic.

Do Not Marry Kevin Federline

This should be self explanatory; however, it appears that Britney Spears never got the memo. The level of criticism she received once she started to date the former back up dancer reached epic proportions. Though you should be able to date or marry whatever person you like, the same rules do not apply in the entertainment industry. Marrying Federline made Spears become a punch line. In this case the bad publicity did not bode well for her career. The rule in Hollywood for women seems to be that it is best to marry someone who has the same amount of power or more than you. In the case that your career takes off it is essential to upgrade to a more desirable spouse. Jennifer Garner and Katie Holmes are a great example of this.

Though it may seem unfair that those who choose the entertainment industry for a living have to live by a different set of rules, they do reap the rewards of their profession. Celebrities earn large amounts of money, often more in a year then many achieve in their lifetimes. They receive preferential treatment much of the time, receive complimentary expensive items when they can afford to pay. Perhaps it is fitting that they get themselves into such crazy situations. It makes life a bit more fair.

How celebrities look like is a never-ending fantasy for almost everyone. They look gorgeous in TV, in films and everywhere they go. They brighten up award nights of almost every kind and photographers compete to catch a shot of their marvelous walk down a red carpet. An aura of invincibility surrounds their beautiful appearance and one just worries how anyone can remain there with the features in tact. The appearance of celebrities buys them food (clothes, cars and mansions) and they have to pay extra attention to retain the features that fans love. Just as the clothes, hairstyle and makeup they wear, they are also disciplined to keep their body in shape.

The diet, rest and workout of sexy celebrities give a clue to their secret of staying fit and rosy. Here are the diet secrets of seven women celebrities.

1. Jennifer Aniston

This phenomenal TV star has a large fan following. Thanks to her witty comments, much imitated hairstyle and a sexy slender body. She adores the covers of countless magazines. Staying trim and fit is the result of discipline at personal diet. Her diet follows a 40:30:30 rule.

40% Low sugar carbohydrates
-Beans, legumes, fruits and vegetables give the necessary carbohydrates

30% lean proteins
-Low fat dairy products, chicken, turkey, beef, Tofu and fish

30% essential fats
-nuts and seeds, fish and olive oils

It is essential to have a well balanced diet to ensure essential nutrients, hormonal balance and weight loss.

2. Kate Hudson

Do you wonder how this gorgeous daughter of Goldie Hawn shed the extra 60 pounds she gained during her pregnancy? Kate Hudson quickly switched to a high protein diet and got herself into a systematic workout plan. Silencing the last voice of criticism on the figures she had after her pregnancy, she shed all the extra pounds and gained some abs to the envy of many. Her high protein diet coupled with aerobics and weight training surely is beneficial for female bodies.

3. Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey, the celebrated talk show host has to retain her appearance for the sake of millions of her audience around the world. With a body that quickly attracts body mass, Oprah has to fight that extra fat on a regular basis. Oprah Winfrey works out five days a week, spending 30 minutes at treadmill and doing free-weight. She eats fruits, nuts, legumes, vegetables, fish, chicken, and low fat dairy products. Avoids sugar and white flour and she is proud that she doesn’t eat anything after seven in the evening.

4. Gwyneth Paltrow

Does Gwyneth Paltrow diet? Normal question from many fans, Gwyneth follows an eating regime that abhors dairy products, sugar and white flour. Vegetables, brown rice and lean meat are regular in her plate. Yoga is another secret to her perfect figures.

5. Madonna

The pop star that is the dream of men around the world, Madonna the Material Girl has the body to die for. She made her name synonymous to fitness and keeping sexy figures for so long. Her love to Ashtanga yoga and dislike to junk food ensure her body remains in shape. Her organic diet is rich in lean protein and junk food is out of question.

6. Claudia Schiffer

This super model from Germany has one the simplest diet plan among all celebrities. She takes fruits, tea and honey for breakfast, salads or soups for lunch and chicken or tuna salad or a piece of regular chicken for supper. For supper it can also be vegetables only. While on locations, you can see her eating black grapes and drinking tomato juice or herbal tea.

7. Christie Brinkley

This vegetarian supermodel with all-American looks shuns junk food of all kinds and even doesn’t give junk food items access to her refrigerator. Occasionally snacks on sweet potatoes, but avoids candy bars, Christie Brinkley shifts to a juice diet whenever she feels the need of slimming down fast.

Constantly on the eyes of public and more importantly closer to lens, celebrities cannot adopt a lax attitude on their appearance. Maybe ordinary people too can appear trimmed and healthy just like the celebrities do. After all celebrities too are ordinary people that happen to be more on focus.

Celebrities With A Bigger Purpose Making A Bigger Difference

Celebrities can not help the fact they that are so popular. We see them all over television on network television and cable and satellite channels. It is us after all, the adoring fans that create them and make them popular in the first place. If we did not care about what was going on in their lives, they would not become so famous. It might seem to most of us average unknown people that celebrities seem to be really full of themselves, and some defiantly are, but not all of them.

If we keep up to date with the news, not the celebrity stuff, but important world event news, we should realize that there are celebrities that have made room for more things in their lives besides themselves.

So many of the celebrity entertainment programs that we watch, whether they come on network television or on cable or satellite channels, often do a lot more reporting on the latest scandals that the most currently hot celebrities are immersed in. Many of us can not resist interest in who has done what and to whom. It is human nature to want to listen to gossip, especially if it is true.

Something more important about human nature is hopefully a common desire to help others and in some way make a substantial contribution to the society we live in. Sometimes the stir that some celebrities cause by what project they are working on or what trouble some have gotten themselves into, can overshadow the tremendous humanitarian works that many other famous ones are involved in.

The musician known as Bono, who has been the lead singer and lyricist of the famous group, U2 has become known world wide not only for his music, but also for his humanitarian efforts in Africa. He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and was given the status of honorary knighthood in the United Kingdom.

Other celebrities following his lead, especially concerning Africa, are Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and George Clooney. They are using their status to promote attention to the deplorable conditions of the people in Darfur in Sudan, Africa. Pitt and Jolie have adopted one orphan child from Cambodia and one from Ethiopia. Oprah Winfrey has recently started an all girl school for underprivileged girls in South Africa.

It would not be fair to leave out a lesser known actor and comedian that constantly encourages a greener and better world. Ed Begley Jr. has played characters in several television shows and has become an outspoken activist for all things green or things good for our planet. He promotes all kinds of environmentally friendly products and currently has a show on HGTV called Living with Ed.

So the next time you think some celebrities are just more pretty faces, look a little closer and you might see something a little more substantial.

Is the Flood Of Paparazzi Just Too Much For Celebrities

How exciting it can be for those of us who have never experienced even the slightest bit of popularity or recognition to have our name in the paper for some minor thing. We will usually buy up several copies of the paper and carefully clip it out to frame or put in a scrapbook. It might be the only moment of fame that we ever have and we want to be able to go back and remember it fondly. Everyone wants to have a little recognition or fame in their life for something, but there are others who might tell you that there can definitely be too much of a good thing like recognition.

Our society idolizes our celebrities. Many of us will buy a magazine or newspaper simply because it has some captivating picture or headline about one of our favorite stars. Celebrity pictures and stories are one of the hottest selling commodities on the market today and you better believe that reporters and photographers take every opportunity they can to get these stories and pictures because they know how much money can be made by having and releasing them first.

Celebrities know the moment that something in their lives happens that it will be of public interest and there is going to be a flood of reporters and photographers following them around trying to get as many pictures and as much information about the issue as they can as quickly as they can. What is news today will be history tomorrow and time is of the essence. The honest reporters and photographers are usually not rejected by celebrities. When their personal privacy is respected, celebrities will usually cooperate with news people and give them as much information as they want revealed, but much of the paparazzi that seem to show them no respect for privacy can become a thorn in their side.

When we buy the magazines and tabloids newspapers that use unscrupulous tactics to obtain their stories and photographs, we are only helping these news people to become even more annoying to the celebrities we love. In recent years some celebrities have been caught losing their patience with the paparazzi because they can never make a move without having microphones of cameras shoved in their faces. Some celebrities have resorted to suing certain paparazzi members, not for the money, but because of the invasion of privacy.

If we want to continue to be able to get the latest true information about popular people, maybe we should be a little more discriminating about what news material we buy. By supporting those news sources that embellish the truth, just make it up, or touch up photos to make them look like something they are not, we are only helping to annoy celebrities even further. Why do we want to pay good money for trashy articles and pictures that probably are not even half true to begin with?

Charities That Celebrities Support

Celebrities are a great way to draw attention to charitable causes. Public figures are very good at drawing attention to an organization’s mission and giving a boost to fund-rising efforts. Now, more and more celebrities are actively involved in different charity events and helping charities has become a trend among stars.

When people come to charity events and they see a celebrity involved in that event, they want to know more about that event and support the cause. Celebrities’ involvement in charities has echoed a lot in society and many are realising it. There are mainly two reasons behind their support. One is because of million of people’s support, they are successful, and feel that it is their responsibility to repay their supporters by contributing to society. Another reason is that the charity work helps them in long term socially and economically. More people will recognize them and love them through their work. This is the reason why, despite their busy schedule, more and more celebrities are actively getting involved in a variety of charitable activities.

Due to celebrities’ involvement, both celebrities and charities equally get the attention they’re seeking. While celebrities satisfy their desire to help society, the charities, on the other hand, enjoy greater visibility, more participation, and receive significant donations.

The benefits, charities enjoy are:

Celebrities’ participation attracts masses
Raises funds by sponsorship and contribution
Raises an organization’s profile and media coverage
Increases public involvement
Spreading awareness about the organization
Increases visibility among other charities

Though some criticize that celebrities attend charity events only for show and publicity, there is no denying that their presence influences people to take part and their good deeds raise awareness. They not only offer their help, but also tell ordinary people to join in the organization’s volunteer efforts and that is charity in a very real sense.

Great Things About Celebrities

Popular celebrity weeklies such as Star Magazine and In Touch Weekly explore and report on the glamorous world of popular entertainers and celebrities. It is difficult not to harbor any envy when glossy magazines and popular television shows provide picturesque layouts of palatial estates, and reports of multi million dollar pays for earning a living at something that many do not consider to be work. In addition, celebrities also receive special treatment in most instances and often do not have to pay for things though they can afford to.

While it may difficult to begrudge them their exulted status, there are some things that are positive about celebrity and fame. You may turn a lighter shad of green when you realize that celebs:

Inspire Us to Work Harder

Some may consider this negative, but in a culture full of celebrity worship, we want what our favorite entertainers have. We work harder at trying to attain the perfect body because Beyonce Knowles and Jennifer Lopez possess it. We want to own at least one Porsche like Jerry Seinfeld, or platinum Jewelry like Sean Combs.

Though the perfect body may be unattainable, and to be fair celebrities enjoy airbrushing, personal trainers and personal chefs to help them attain either the illusion or an actual perfect body. They make us work harder at being our best self, and most of us figure if he can do it I can do it too.

Teach Us about the World

Not every person blessed with fame is shallow and self involved. Often celebrities use their fame as a platform to increase awareness about national and global problems and events. Whatever the consensus is on Angelina Jolie as a home wrecker, the fact that she has raised awareness of the importance of adoption is indisputable. Jolie, adopted two children from third world nations bringing an awareness of the plight of children in poor and developing countries. Other celebrities such as Meg Ryan, and Madonna have followed her lead and countless others will undoubtedly follow.

George Clooney may someday run for office, but is currently using his celebrity status to raise awareness of the genocide in Darfur, Sudan. Clooney has helped raise money, and introduced many Americans to a part of the world that is often not discussed on their local news.

In addition to world events celebrities also help to raise awareness and money for foundations for rare and incurable diseases. Both Michael J. Fox and Muhammad Ali suffer from Parkinsons disease, Christopher Reeve was an outspoken advocate for people with spinal disabilities. Celebrities make it cool to do charitable activities such as doing a walk for cancer or encouraging women to be tested for breast cancer and men for prostate cancer. Celebrities such as Fran Drescher, and Rudolph Giuliani tell their stories and share their fight with the diseases which undoubtedly saves lives.

Though it is quite easy to look at most entertainers as overpaid and egotistical, remember there are two sides to the equation.
